After seeing over 400 names added to the on-line petition, Deputy Joe McHugh says that he is extremely happy with the level of interest in bringing a rail link to Donegal.
The petition, which is to be presented to the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey, is calling for money to be allocated for a feasibility study for the major project, which involves linking Derry, Letterkenny and Sligo.
McHugh, who has always been an advocate of rail, says that he is heartened by the comments left by those who have signed the petition.

Some of the reasons given for wanting to re-introduce a railway system to Donegal were to cut down on road deaths, to cut down on traffic congestion and to be kinder to the environment. The proposed railway line would connect Derry, Letterkenny and Sligo.

Here is a video that examines why a rail link should be re-introduced to Donegal, and gives a little history about it too.

I encourage everyone to sign the petition.

I am in total agreement with a rail service in Donegal. Its an idea i thought of when i came across an old Donegal Railway metal sign some years ago.The advantages of a rail service throughout Donegal, would indeed decrease the motor traffic on the roads as-well as being a charming and simple service for tourists to this lovely County. Can you imagine at each stop, the amount of income that could be generated, from,Bed and Breakfast, local goods, tours and entertainment,ie,music, sports etc.It would surely be an great advantage for locals and tourists alike,to park their cars,or arrive by taxi,to a station, board a train and go to many locations for work or play and return home safely without the stress and hassle of having to drive everywhere, that we all encounter in this day and age. What better way to travel to work or play, enjoying the beautiful countryside and views without all the stress.I had even considered contacting Richard Branson, who i believe has interests in rail services already,i think a smart entrepreneur like him would leap at the chance, someone is going to have to do it,it is a very smart and practical solution for Donegal.
