Why we're better than digg

advertisement

I managed to find a video that brilliantly sums up why we're better than anyone else.

It also marks out Stacy Malbon as the newsvine poster child.

-Dave

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Would anyone argue with the choice of Stacy Malbon as the newsvine poster child?

I think having Stacy highlights another difference between Newsvine and Digg: while I don't have access to any demographics, Digg always had a very boys-club kind of feel. Here on the Vine, some of our most powerful voices are women. Aine, Stacy, Celestina and Pamela come immediately to mind as some of our MVPs, so I'm glad to see one of them representing us.

Plus, she's got a really nice smile and that never hurts... :)

Alright, I'm just going to admit it--I like the Stacy choice. Many Viners are excellent, so there were many good choices. I am a fan of Stacy's writing and the care she takes in making comments that add to the weight of discussion threads. We are better than Digg & Stacy Rocks!

Then you've lost something which you'll never gain back. Imagine if I had done the same with my experience here at Newsvine. The first article I read on Newsvine was a Goodby article from some user named "yar". My second article was another Goodby article by the same user. The third article I read was a final goodby article by same user. If I were you, I wouldn't have said bye-bye to Newsvine and left.

You are chooseing to digress from the point of Mr.Ford's comment and my response to him. Which is that you can't just judge something just by reading two articles. Do you have anything to add to that? Or are you just content with making Newsvine-patriotic comments and then resting and waiting for your fan club to come and digg up your comment?

Abdul, when you are new to Newsvine and insult Newsvine and praise Digg, it just doesn't sit well with people. It makes it seem like you are here to troll. I'm sure you are not here to be disrespectful, but sometimes you come off that way. You are right, you do not have to be a fan of Newsvine to participate. It's just kind of weird that someone would spend time in a place they don't like. To be honest, I don't think you dislike Newsvine as much as you appeared to at first. Is it growing on you just a little bit? That happens with some users. :)

This would be like me taking part in gay midget porn. I wouldn't like it at all and would complain all the time at how much it blows (or fails to), and when somebody suggests that if I'm happy I should move out, I get my knickers in a twist and claim that just because I'm not a fan of taking part of a homosexual orgy of people under 3 feet having ravenous buttsex does not mean I cannot participate.

From recent personal experience, it is worse than user fraud. There is a definite sense of self-promotion and a secret army at Digg that plays havoc with anything that goes against the Digg agenda. Very unsavoury. May have a bigger user base but it is arguable how valuable that really is, other than possibly helping the Google search algorythms for search results of sites linked from Digg. Hope I haven't broken the Newsvine code of ethics by speaking my mind.

Newsvine is a whole lot better, real and user-friendly. For a social networking site, the Vine is the model! Great video - I'm to new to have gotten to know Stacy but she comes across as an excellent ambassador.

Bubblewrap. Positive Vibes. On the Vine.

I assume it's obvious to almost all that the shortfall of digg as opposed to Newsvine is the vote down button. It's not about content; it's about credibility of presentation of content. To hide is to be hidden, and to be hidden well is to disappear. Eventually digg will dig what Newsvine knows already.

"We're better than digg." That's a bit unsporting is it not? I've been a reader of both Digg and Newsvine for a long time and can't fault either of them for providing the kind of thing I'm looking for. The content you'll find on either side is completely different.

Newsvine is exactly what it is, News. Digg users provide (albeit different from what the founders intended) links to just 'cool stuff'. Lots of the stuff found on Newsvine you'll never find on Digg and vice versa.

Newsvine is just delivered in a much more professional way, and is great for news stories. But if I'm just looking for something cool on the web, Digg's there. It's really hard to compare the two, although the intentions of both are the same.

        We are pretty for sure
        diverse as well
But for me there is one main reason we are better than digg.

        1. Above all else, respect others. If you see disrespectful behavior, report it, rather than further inflaming the situation.

and really the rest of the Code of Honor

Digg suffers from 3 and 4 a lot
self promotion and sensationalistic headlines OMG

Curse you, internet web filters. I'll have to watch it when I get off of work.

I agree with Joules here, I think the respect is what makes the community run so smooth. There's something about the site and the people on it that makes you really push for it, you want it to do well and to never sink to the level of so many other sites out there that host debate have. I've seen members that will come on with an "I'm going to destroy you!" attitude which fades pretty fast when they are only met time and time again with civil debate. Heck, I'm no stranger to fighting dirty myself, but I try to conduct myself in a manner that I can have pride in because I feel that it's a site and a community that is worthy of much respect.

Well, that and when I start getting all uppity, Watts comes and yells at me. And you don't want the Watts lecture, trust me. ;)

In my opinion it's apples and oranges. Personally, I think Vine is only better in terms of delivering mainstream news. As a mainstream news site, Vine does well to let users have their say with votes and user-created articles. It is also a good move to include what the major news sources are reporting as well.

But it while Vine's presentation maybe more accessible to so and so's dad, Digg is most certainly not marketing to so and so's dad, unless that dad is into the same things as Kevin Rose and the like are into. Sure, Digg includes mainstream news categories, but they were only added to appease. The site began as and will likely always be more directly geared towards tech and gamer news.

I've been here for only a coupla months and I can say that the only reason why Newsvine is "better" than Digg is the Newsvine code of Honor. If you didn't have that, ya bet yerass that this would be no different from some of the comments that seem to define some unmoderated forum on the internet. The people here ain't no different from folks elsewhere - you have your share of egomaniacs, attention-whores, drama-queens, vigilantes, bullies, softies, pansies, lefties, righties, and lastly, a few real good writers, Killfile being one of them. (Y'all, if you haven't checked out Killfile's column, you should. That dude is just pure awesome. He rocks! I'm still trying to find any bull@!$%# comment or meaningless remark from him. Methinks he's a robot. Hehehe )

It's not the people that is the critical factor, it's the infrastructure, and the rules. I find it funny that y'all jump on a Youtube video as proof that Newsvine is better than Digg. Hahaha. Man, that's just funny.

I know this will be dugg down, but I just had to say it. I don't mean to offend anyone, especially since I told stolte-sawa that I will try to be nice to everyone.

Abdul - assuming your title and summary is half-decent, you have an army of 'friends' to swarm around your piece, and you are a little selective of your topic (leftist, conspiracy theories, Apple, pro-Digg), you will make it to the FP. Else, you might as well whistle till the cows come home.

Good video. I never saw Newsvine as a competitor of Digg anyways. Newsvine has a much more professional look, and stories from reputable news outlets. Information here is well balanced, more complete and includes related pictures. Digg is nothing more than a link farm that gets gamed way too much to be credible.

            Meh, Just another meaningless soundbite.

Right now, these are the news outlets for some of the stories on digg's front page:

            bbc
            livescience.com
            chicagotribune.com
            space.com
            techcrunch.com
            ubuntuforums.org
            msnbc.com

Methinks they qualify as reputable news outlets.

Ya know, it might help if you back up yer claims with substance else you might come across lookin' like a Dick. Dick Cheney, I mean.

As for credibility, you just read what you like. Hover your mouse over the link and you see where's it points to. Proceed if you like.

Listen bro, bashing Digg ain't gonna make Newsvine better. Newsvine and Digg have different purposes. You'll sleep well if you recognize that. Look at the most active stories for Newsvine right now, 3 of the 6 are just articles about Newsvine written by Newsvine users. Whaddya think about that??

            Oh my God.

Digg is going to hate me....

I just thought it'd be funny to post this.

And this has turned into my most popular anything ever.

I know its bad netiquette to link to your own articles, but I made an article dealing with this same subject a while ago. Though newsvine obviously takes the cake in aesthetics, I think another more important aspect of why it's better than digg is discussed in my terse little rant.

I think most people actually don't mind so long as it's on-topic and it's not an "every comment I make is a link to my own content" type of thing.

And oh, if you think only Digg is prone to gaming the system and Newsvine is free of all that crap, it means you have been sleeping or been hidin' yer head in the sand like an ostrich. Check out this article and then this article and then read comment 6 of this article to put it all in perspective.

Then tell me what you think of gaming. Or exploitation of the system as this comment succinctly puts it.

We all are just humans. We all are selfish. Once we recognize that, we are on the way to enlightenment. No point in claiming that one is better than the other because it doesn't exploit or reward exploitation as much.

That video is pretty bad... plus I wouldn't try to compare Digg to Google News to Newsvine. Each has their own niche and they serve it well.

It's like anything else....you like what you're comfortable with. I've been to the others, and I prefer Newsvine. I like Coke over Pepsi too. Not that one is better than the other...you get my point. It's not a competition, just a preference.
